With all the hustle and bustle TIFF brought to Toronto this past week, it was great to change gears and enjoy the soulful melodies of Laura Mvula and King at The Mod Club.

Let’s start off with King – a female trio based out of LA. Amber, Paris and Anita make up a groovy sound that delivers a chill 80′s slow jam feel. The ladies went through the songs from their EP, The Story, where all songs are written by the girls and produced by Paris herself. The vibe was calm and the crowd was plenty for an opener. You can tell these girls absolutely love what they’re doing.

Then came the headliner – one whom I’ve been itching to see live since I heard her single ‘Green Garden’ earlier this year. Laura Mvula has that type of easy listening voice that’s earthy, honest and real. The British singer was all smiles throughout her set – an expression easily shared by her audience. The full house was a nice appreciation for her talent as the singer joked that she was told the Toronto crowd would be pretty ‘tame’. Our eyes, ears and minds were locked in as she grooved us through her set.

Take a stab at her new album, Sing to the Moon – you won’t be disappointed.
