Festival Review: Digital Dreams 2013 @ The Flats at M.C.A

Toronto was supposed to be in for a wet rainy Canada Day long weekend, instead we were treated to sunshine and one of the best EDM festivals – Digital Dreams! Kudos to the whole DD crew for successfully pulling off a well organized all around good time for the people of TO. Coming off last year’s line fiasco, although hesitant going in, there was none of that this year!

Each of the stages were packed with all of the partiers trying to take in their favourite DJ set. That being said, I hardly spent time at Echo Beach, as my time was juggled between the Dreams Stage and House of Boom. A weekend highlight was Dillon Francis’ bass heavy set in the tent, but more importantly when he closed with an un-remixed version of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”. He had the tent going off hard and instantly turned it into an 80′s dance party.

Other notables were TJR, Bob Sinclar, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Porter Robinson, Excision, and of course the big draw – Tiesto. Truthfully I’m not a huge trance fan so I never pay much attention to Tiesto, but knowing he’s switched to house I was curious to see how he would pull it off. The crowd was ready and Tiesto brought it in a big way playing all the big tunes that would fill a big room. Seems like he knows his roots though, dropping a few classics such as ‘Traffic’ to please the masses.

To me, it seemed like the most hype was around the Tomorrowland veterans Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. The crowd chanted in anticipation, and I noticed that everyone around me seemed super excited for them to take the stage. The energy at 7pm (Day 2) from the large crowd was something to be seen! The set was really heavy on anthems and I don’t think anyone seemed to mind. Everyone wanted to hear an hour set of bangers they can rage to. Or maybe everyone watched the Tomorrowland after movie as much as me, and wanted the closest dose of the festival in our hometown.  These guys brought it, and as someone going to Tomorrowland in a few weeks, they will be part of my schedule!

Another successful year of Digital Dreams brings another countdown until next year… But with the lack of a true long weekend next year, lets see how 2014 pans out. Either way – I’ll be there!
