Live Review: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club @ Kool Haus (5/9)

American rock and roll legends Black Rebel Motorcycle Club returned to Toronto on May 9th, in support of their seventh full-length album, Specter At the Feast. Now a decade and a half old, BRMC have built and maintained a loyal following, upon a solid discography, and a reputation for consistently putting on unpredictable and epic live performances. The band has been very loyal to their always enthusiastic Toronto audiences, but prior to this show, it had been just over three years since BRMC’s last Toronto performance. This extended break for a consistently active band result from the passing away of founding member Robert Been’s father Michael (formerly of The Call, and father figure to the band). After taking some time to recuperate and regroup, the band returned to the studio to carry the band’s legacy into a new decade. For many of BRMC’s fans, their legendary live show will always remain their legacy, and their inevitable tour stop at the Kool Haus displayed why.

Shortly after 9pm, the band entered the stage with some of the heaviest songs from Specter at the Feast, which got the crowd loud and properly involved. While much of the new album was showcased over the evening, the BRMC discography was actually well-represented throughout the varied set. The pace remained very energetic from the experienced trio, until Peter and Robert brought out their acoustic guitars to exchange a couple of very powerful renditions of ‘Mercy’ and ‘Devil’s Waitin’’.

After turning up the volume once again for a mix of old and new BRMC material, Robert invited the enthusiastic audience over and around the barrier that separated the stage from the audience. The crowd really responded and were rewarded further with a few more of the band’s classics, including ‘Six Barrel Shotgun’ and ‘Spread Your Love’, to close out the main set.

The general awesomeness of this BRMC set was never going to be enough for the audience tonight, so the trio returned with ‘Sell it’, and an epic rendition of Specter At the Feast’s closer ‘Lose Yourself’. Well after 11pm, the house lights signalled the end of a show that could only leave all who attended satisfied. If you made the mistake of missing Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the band promised that they will return to Toronto soon, to share their brand of gritty American rock and roll once again.
