The Carlu Celebrates 10 Prosperous Years | Toronto

This year marks the 10-year anniversary of one of our favourite Toronto event venues!

Step into the year 1930 when The Carlu was first opened and imagine yourself as a guest to one of Lady Eaton’s sumptuous soirées. The marble elevator takes you up seven floors and when you arrive, the doors open to reveal an opulent and sophisticated space designed by French architect Jacques Carlu (1890 – 1976). The mood is 1930s film noir and the bird’s eye maple wall paneling and monel metal trim are breathtaking. As you walk to your seat, the exquisite monochromatic colour palette, Lalique fountain and architectural details dissolve as time and history steal away the glory and elegance.

Now transport to May 1, 2003 and see once again the former splendor and beauty restored to one of Toronto’s historical landmarks. During the summer of 2001, entrepreneurs Jeffry Roick and Mark Robert undertook what has been called “…the highest profile heritage restoration in Canada”. After many financial battles, Roick and Robert, with the help of private investors, finally raised the $8 million needed to restore one of the world’s finest surviving examples of Art Moderne architecture.

A decade later, the four distinct rooms at The Carlu have held more than 1650 events including the Genie Awards, the Oscar de la Renta Fashion Show, and the Blackberry 10 Launch. Performers such as Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado and Frank Sinatra – just to name a few – have serenaded fans in the 8,500 square feet auditorium. In addition, The Carlu has hosted events for Canada’s Top Model, Project Runway and Top Chef Canada. Amongst many famous celebrities, Gordon Ramsay, Kathy Griffin, Queen Latiffiah, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt have also come to enjoy events held at The Carlu.

Voted as Canada’s Top Venue in 2012 by Meetings + Incentive Travel Magazine, The Carlu is a versatile venue that welcomes patrons to enjoy the elegance and 1930 Art Moderne style that Lady Eaton once envisioned for Toronto.

The Carlu is set to celebrate its decade achievements with a momentous event that will have the whole city talking.
