“There’s nothing like art and Fashion Therapy to cure a bit of madness.” – Vanja Vasic, Executive Director of FAT
From April 23rd to 27th, Fashion Art Toronto (FAT) will be showcasing inventive and contemporary expression through fashion design, photography, film and art installations during their 2013 Arts and Fashion Week. This annual multi-arts event will kick start with the theme, fashionDRAMA featuring the Workman Arts Mad Couture Catwalk on the night of the 23rd.
If you’re unfamiliar, Workman Arts provides individuals who have mental illnesses opportunities to engage in creative activities that develop their artistic strengths. Here, individuals labeled with mental illness can learn to identify themselves as artists rather than patients defined by their diagnosis.
As a fashion lover, I am extremely excited to see what will show up on the runway. The catwalk will showcase 28 wearable artwork pieces created by 10 Workman Arts artists. Every button, piece of fabric and thread will embody each designer’s insight to mental illness. Each garment has been meticulously weaved with humour, heartache, pain, celebration, frustration and acceptance. Using different textures, digital technology, fabrics and embellishments, these designers invite us to evoke our connection to nature, our environment and our daily lives.
If by the end of the night, you’re left wondering if you’ve gone mad, then let me impart you with the same secret as Alice did to the Mad Hatter — “All the best people are.”
I hope you’ll join us in an unforgettable night filled with art, drama and fashion. You won’t regret it.
