Recap: 2013 SiriusXM Indies w/ Metric | Canadian Music Week

On March 22nd, the 2013 SiriusXM Indies celebrated a great year in independent music, in style at Toronto’s Kool Haus. Now in its 13th year, the Indies acknowledge, promote and honour the achievements of Canadian and International independent artists in the independent music sector.

The evening was hosted by SiriusXM’s Music Programming Director Jeff Leake, who did an excellent job of keeping the evening moving at a brisk pace. Early on, the Indies were a blend of many awards, and performances from some great upcoming Canadian indie artists. Among the highlights of these performances was the refined folk rock of the Wooden Sky, and the powerful gospel folk of Cold Specks, who showcased her incredible voice. Backstage, the scene looked like an Exclaim! magazine cover. Everywhere you looked, it was the who’s who of Canadian indie music, all in the same room. In this case, that room was the rather sci-fi environment of the Chroma club, which served this special occasion well.

A quick glance of the watch and the schedule revealed that the evening’s events were nearly complete. However, this was no ordinary awards show. Instead, the Indies are music-centric, as a show celebrating great music should be. Next up were glammed-up Diamond Rings, along with his backing band, who closed the awards portion of the evening sporting black sunglasses and matching jackets. Diamond Rings rocked his danceable synthpop and some impressive dance moves to an audience that was ready to party.

After a short layover, Matt Mays and El Torpedo took the stage full of energy with their brand of folk rock (with an emphasis on rock). Lacking the visual aesthetics of the act they followed, the humble Matt Mays and his band quickly won the crowd over with only fine musicianship at their disposal. The band faultlessly played its early singles and also showcased the strong material from 2012′s Coyote. This was definitely not a band phoning in an awards show performance, this was a band showing some real gusto for a passionate and appreciative audience. It had all the markings of a headlining set, had it not been known that Metric would be up next.

Amazingly, the evening actually remained on schedule until Metric took the stage, 15 minutes. The anxious crowd were clearly here for Toronto’s Metric, staple of the Canadian scene for well over a decade, and also the recipient of two of the evening’s biggest awards (Group of the Year and Best-Selling Independent Release). As usual, the band were all business from the moment they entered the hazy laser-lit stage. Emily Haines was very mobile on the Kool Haus stage, as she led the band with an amazing vocal performance through a set that focused on the band’s recent output, from Fantasies and 2012′s Synthetica. Only a few early Metric favourites made an appearance, but they were all very well received by the heavily involved audience. Long after 1am, Metric finished their solid set and solidified their continued place among the very best of the Canadian indie music scene.

The 2013 edition of the SiriusXM Indies were a great success that showcased the very best of upcoming Canadian independent music and the very best of Canadian indie music, period. The future of Canadian music looks promising indeed.
