Major Lazer @ Sound Academy | Free The Universe Tour

Major Lazer - Crowd

On Feb 28th, Toronto got an early treat of the general – Major Lazer. This was the first night on their Free The Universe world tour, and although the album (of the same name) has been delayed, they still delivered. They kept dropping hints of their material, and most of it was familiar if you’ve been following them within the last year. The generic Lazer antics were all there, song rewinds, dressed up crowd, and of course Diplo’s signature “Express Yourself”. They invited multiple women on stage to dance for their new track ‘Bubble Butt’, and then told only the women who were ready to Express Yourself to stay on afterwards. If anyone is unfamiliar with this dance, see the music video below, or check Diplo’s twitter feed for the constant retweets. It was a cold night in Toronto, but they still managed to make it steamy in Sound Academy.

People might not know the many talents of Diplo, but Major Lazer is his side project, and yet his main passion. He is a huge producer – Grammy nominated for Producer of the Year, and has worked with an eclectic mix of artists ranging from Snoop Dogg (Lion), No Doubt, Busy Signal, Bruno Mars, and Justin Bieber to name a few.

Major Lazer

I’ve been a longtime fan of Major Lazer, and feel this will continue. Their mixture of dancehall, reggae, dubstep, and electro is the different nature that keeps their fans devoted. They get a show every time regardless of where or when. I just need to see them again after their album has properly been released.
