After talking to a close friend of mine who attended the 2012 VINEXPO Asia Pacific exhibition held in Hong Kong, I became incredibly intrigued. With more than 48,000 visitors hailing from 148 different countries, VINEXPO is the largest global wine and spirits showcase. On January 22, Xavier de Eizaguirre (Chairman of VINEXPO) unveiled the latest Canadian and International wine and spirits trends at a conference held at Toronto’s very own Arcadian Court.
Here’s a short summary to get you up to speed on where we, as Canadians, stand in the market.
According to the VINEXPO market study, the growth in Canadian wine consumption is three times faster than at world level. Cheers to Canada for drinking 518.52 million bottles of wine between 2007 and 2011. We’re on our way to becoming the 5th fastest wine growing market behind China, the U.S., Russia and Germany.
Quick fact: almost three out of four bottles of wine drunk by Canadians are imported and our leading supplier is Italy with France taking second place.
Finally, the VINEXPO study revealed that vodka is our favourite tipple. In 2011, Canadians consumed 4.76 million 9-liter cases. Rum, tequila and bourbon are becoming increasingly more popular but unfortunately whiskey and gin have lost all ground.
This year, VINEXPO will be held in the prestigious Bordeaux, France, a main wine industry capital in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site! How cool is that? As an avid traveler and a ginormous foodie, I think this exhibition would be a great hub to learn about various wines and spirits from professionals around the world.
Three things that you can expect are:
- The Tastings by VINEXPO Programme featuring tastings, new product presentations and more.
- Exhibitions from world class groups such as Castel Frères and Champagnes Lanson.
- National pavilions exhibiting spirits and wine from countries such as Germany, the U.S., Chile, Italy, Spain and many others. This year, VINEXPO will also be introducing, for the first time, the Mexican pavilion and a South-African national stand.
