Grouper Social Club Launches in Toronto | New Friendships Await?

Grouper has finally come to Canada and specifically Toronto. I’ll try my best to give you a rundown of what this is all about.

The American social networking website is designed to help you meet other like-minded people. Let me be specific here – it’s not a dating service (per se).

You take two of your best buddies (male if you’re male, female if you’re female) and go meet three others of similar interests (and the opposite sex) in a bar or lounge – buy a round of drinks and see where the night goes. Make sense? The goal is to make connections and friendships in a comfortable group setting.

I recently had an opportunity to chat with one of the site’s founders, Michael Waxman, about his popular site and why 93 percent of Grouper members say they would go on another Grouper. The New York based entrepreneur states the majority of them go on their second outing within a month.

The site uses a unique algorithm that aims to match you with the right people. Michael was convinced, with the data to prove it, that members who go on a Grouper, “...have a great story to tell either way”I agree with him on this. If I were to go on a Grouper, I’d at least have my best friend Chris tagging along to provide ‘wing-man support’ and a buffer if things aren’t working out.

I asked Michael what he was really trying to achieve with this service and his response was, We are taking the online Facebook experience back offline and really connecting people in the traditional sense… enhancing that real need that exists within people, especially in larger cities, of wanting to meet and connect with like-minded people.”

I understand what he’s talking about – today everyone seems caught up in their iPhone and Facebook, and sometimes this makes it harder to actually meet new people, randomly, that share common interests.

So which Toronto spots currently host these gatherings? The founder says, “we have the members give us their opinion, of the places they like and where they think others members would like”. Basically, you’ll meet at places pre-approved by other Grouper members. So far,  Hair of the DogStirling Room, and Habits Gastropub are some of the choices you have.

I think going on at least one Grouper is worth the experience – look for future posts on this. You going to tag along?
