Sept 25th was an 80’s takeover.

Journey (opened by Loverboy and Pat Benatar) came to the Hamilton Copps Coliseum to play for a bodacious crowd of old rockers and young wannabes itching to hear some of their favourite songs from the ‘golden years’.

Although the concert didn’t seem sold-out, those who did show were clearly driven by nostalgia and a melancholy sense of belonging. It actually felt like I had entered the greatest ‘karaoke’ show of my life. You know your one uncle that has to sing his polished rendition of ‘Any Way You Want It’ at every family gathering? Yeah, he was at the Copps that night – along with his 10 drinking buddies who practice the song weekly at the local bar.

Journey – a band who’s been riddled with so much change over the years, seems to have finally found a comfortable zone since the face and voice of the band, Steve Perry, left in 98’.

This was actually my first time hearing the band play since they obtained their new lead singer – Filipino born, Arnel Pineda. I admit I was sceptical going into the show as he doesn’t have the image of a front-man for a band as legendary as they are.

But hey – I was pleasantly surprised!

Pineda’s voice is nothing but spot on. I’m not talking about a great cover sound like what we get from the Glee Cast. Closing my eyes, I could have mistaken him for Perry himself. He even added energy to the entire performance with his movements and dancing. If you don’t know already, they actually recruited this guy off of YouTube. Yeah, stay tuned for my own audition videos – not really… :(

I doubt the ‘golden years’ of rock will be making a significant comeback anytime soon – but I’m glad these kinds of bands are still around. I walked in with lower than average expectations and walked out with a renewed love. Journey, you’ve got me believin’.
