Embracing the spirit of Venice’s Carneval, the anticipated Venetian Ball came back for its 19th year on Oct 13. It was a ‘suit-it-up’ night for Karl and I as we joined over 1000 young and mature professionals to celebrate Italian excellence at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Each year, The Venetian Ball raises funds to support the important and unique work of Villa Charities, a family of organizations that has grown its mandate of providing care for seniors to include support for individuals with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues.

This was a masquerade we had been looking forward to for months. We love hitting-up the glamorous side of Toronto’s social scene, and the Venetian Ball delivered. Gorgeous masks, famous faces, and unique entertainment were in abundance – including a selection of food stations, offering Venetian cuisine by some of Toronto’s top restaurants.

Hosted by Breakfast Television’s Kevin Frankish, the ball outdid itself with an auction and stacked lineup of performances. The annual event is known for bringing in top-name global talent while capping each year off with one mystery performer. Past acts have included Stevie Wonder, Frankie Valli and Dragonette’s Martina Sorbara.

Following a set by Toronto’s Simply Grand came Canadian comedian and singer, André-Philippe Gagnon – best known for his spot-on celebrity singing impersonations. Loved his renditions of LMFAO, Axel Rose, C-Lo Green and Louis Armstrong. I should also mention his hilarious facial expressions – can’t get over some of the stuff this guy came up with.

So who were the mystery performers?  None other than the original 1950’s teen idol ‘Golden Boys’ – Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Lou Christie. Favourite highlight was when Avalon walked around the room to cater to the crowd and woo the ladies. The Grease star still has it – including that famous haircut!
