Gotye Plays for Toronto @ Molson Canadian Amphitheatre

“Now you’re just somebody that I used to know?” Given the amount of empty seats at last night’s (Sept 20) Gotye show in Toronto, it would seem like it. Last time he was in TO, he was booked at the Phoenix Concert Hall but then was switched to Kool Haus due to demand. The jump from Kool Haus to Molson Canadian Amphitheatre was like graduating elementary and going straight to University. It was just not the right venue. I felt a bit sorry for him.

Wouter “Wally” De Backer – aka Gotye

Negative comments aside, I did really enjoy his set. This Aussie is really talented! Jumping around the stage playing a different array of instruments. The vibe was cool, and the crowd just chilled out with him. The setup was simple with a giant screen in the background that displayed some entertaining, funny, and visually stimulating images, always in sync with the music he was playing.

Song highlights were “Eyes Wide Open”, “State of The Art” and “Dig Your Own Hole”.

Although the song is definitely overplayed, the crowd still roared in excitement when he played arguably his biggest hit to date – “Somebody I Used To Know”. Oddly enough though, this wasn’t his final song or encore, but the second last song before his closer – leading into his encore. I walked in knowing very little, walked out with a lot of respect. Am I a new fan? The jury is still out on that one.
