Space Ibiza Music Festival 2012 @ Sound Academy

On June 9th, the lady friend and I attended the Space Ibiza Music Festival at Sound Academy. Deep house actually isn’t really my style but a friend was promoting for the event and offered me some cheap early-bird tickets.

For those who aren’t really familiar with the different levels and genres of house music – Ibiza style is more repetitive and classic. Layering constant tracks and drops on top of a repetitive underlying beat is its signature. Think of rugged basslines and ‘steely beats’. If you’re looking to listen to a DJ that will drop that favourite top 40 song you’ve been listening to for the past week – the Space Ibiza Festival isn’t for you. Listeners of this genre come for the beat and to dance.

I guess you can say I’m more of an Electro House listener (ex: deadmau5, David Guetta, Kaskade, Swedish House Mafia). However, I can appreciate all types of house as long as I can get the dance-on.

The Event

The event had a robust lineup as expected of any music festival:

Umek
Pleasurekraft
Jay Lumen
DJ Remo
Heartik

All the DJs were actually pretty good. I admit, I had only heard of a couple of them (ie: Umek, Pleasurekraft) – but I really liked what they had to bring. The crowd was definitely into it which automatically makes 80% of a good show (nobody wants to dance by themselves).

The lady friend and I arrived during DJ Remo’s set. He had some funky drops that I liked. The venue didn’t really fill up until Jay Lumen was halfway into his gig. Pleasurekraft and Umek took away the show with their sets. I have to say, I enjoyed listening to them the most. I found their styles were slightly more complex but could stay on beat without getting complicated.

The Venue

This was my first time attending a show at Sound Academy – great venue! Not only was the inside spacious, but they had a huge patio that overlooked the river. We got a great view of the Toronto cityscape.

The light show was decent as well. I got really impressed when Kryoman the Robot made an appearance. I think we need a dino-shaped suit like this for Dinosaurus Rex. Any volunteers to wear it?

Kryoman the Robot

This summer is packed with EDM music festivals – I’m so stoked! Feel free to come hang out with Dinosaurus Rex at one of the many upcoming festivals in Toronto.

IDFest – July 21

Digital Dreams Music Festival – June 30 & July 1

VELD Music Festival – August 4 & 5
