14th Annual Gumball 3000 meet in Toronto – Recap [PICS]

Karl and I actually had to duel over who got to cover this event – each of us claiming to know more about cars than the other. This was quickly resolved when I reminded him that he doesn’t own a car.  :P

If you were hanging around Bloor-Yorkville on Friday, May 25th, you most undoubtedly noticed the array of luxury cars driving in for the 14th annual Gumball 3000 rally.

For those who are unfamiliar, this rally brought together 120 cars with various celebrity and luxury car drivers for a 7 day ‘sea-to-sea’ race that started in New York and ended in L.A. on May 31st. Each car needed to pay a $44,000 entry fee to race – so you only see the rich and famous participate.

I follow this race every year and was ecstatic when I heard they were going to make a stop in Toronto. The rally does a great job in bringing together art, pop culture and music by getting mass media coverage and throwing a wide array of parties and concerts in each city they visit.

A lady friend and I showed up at Bloor-Yorkville around 10pm on the Friday to join the huge mob of spectators waiting for the cars to arrive. The event clearly attracted hundreds of car lovers who just wanted to get an up-close look at the luxury makes. You ever hear a Lamborghini Gallardo up close as the engines rev? It’s one of those awesome heart-stopping moments.

We stuck around for a couple hours and probably saw 20 or so cars come in.  There was a joke flying around that all the Gumballers were stuck in our infamous Toronto traffic – which was disheartening but most likely true…*sigh*

Either way, we had a great time just walking around and talking with the drivers and other car enthusiasts. I won’t bore you guys in too many descriptive details – let’s just see the pics!

Note: pay attention to some of the paint jobs on the cars – extremely creative at times!
