Second Harvest’s Toronto Taste 2012

Second Harvest’s Toronto Taste 2012

I have to say, Karl and I didn’t know what we were in for when we decided to attend Toronto Taste on Sunday, May 27th.  Both still being fairly new to the city, we hadn’t had the opportunity to experience this premiered culinary event that has taken place annually for the past 20 years.

Toronto Taste is run by the food rescue and redistribution charity, Second Harvest. I have a friend who volunteers with them and he enthusiastically suggested that I attend this year. The goal of the event was to raise funds and provide over 700,000 meals to Torontonians in need.

When I first read who was going to be at the event, I thought I was dreaming. How often do you see 60 of the city’s best chefs and restaurants rub elbows for one night to deliver the most stellar of feasts? Some of the participants on the list even included familiar celebrity chefs such as Mark McEwan, Lynn Crawford and Marc Thuet.

As self proclaimed foodies, we’ve attended our fair share of food events in the past. Hands down – Toronto Taste was a cut above the rest.

The venue was set up just outside the Royal Ontario Museum in a nice tented area where over 1400 of Toronto’s ‘luxury’ wildlife assembled. Did I mention one ticket to the event cost $250? This event attracted the best and they got the best.

I don’t think I saw one sad face that day. Nothing really to be sad about when you’re surrounded by absolutely every food you could possibly want!

Wine flowing. Seafood Simmering. Desserts Melting. Bacon-wrapped Everything.

Hosts, Roger Mooking and Bob Blumer, provided commentary throughout the night. There was even an auction and some live entertainment. Michael Theodore and his ensemble provided great music for the patrons.

This was our first time at Toronto Taste and definitely won’t be our last. Congratulations to all the restaurants, chefs, sponsors, event planners and 450+ volunteers who donated their time to make this event a success.
